Hi,

I've recently purchased a used Mac G5. It worked fine for like 3 weeks and then when i moved into a new place it seems to freeze alot and the fans are going at full blast.

It used to be like everytime it went into standby mode it wouldn't wake up. I disabled that and now it will run for about 2 days and then i'll come home from work or wake up in the middle of the night with the fans at full speed.

It I force shut it down and then wait a minute and start it back up, it will start up, but not long after that it will give you a message that says Mac needs to restart and it won't let you do anything except to force a shut down.

I've read about this problem on the internet but never really found a solution. Can anyone point in the right direction as to what is causing this?

Yeah, the force shutdown message is a kernel panic. Ive had my G5 for five years, got it brand new. A few months ago fan went high speed, freezups started happening, file saving errors, then kernel panics. The repair shop says its the logic board or processor and the repair cost is $1,800. I think thats probably your situation too since your symptoms are exactly the same as mine.

Sucks huh.

G'day and welcome to the forums.

Where did you buy the G5 and any chance of returning it as it does appear to have major issues? As craig suggests logic board failure is the most common diagnosis for the racing fans.

Also pop in your system disc, which should have come with the machine, reboot holding down 'C" after the chimes and go into Utilities and run Repair Disk and see what is reported. If the original install discs came with the machine, run Apple Hardware Test extended mode which does a check of the logic board and memory.

I would shut down the computer when your not using it. Turn it off. Might be a good idea to back up any stuff you want to keep. Like Now!
