Formatted External HD and it Failed! Help Please!

Just purchased a Seagate 1TB External HD. Plugged it in, open utilities, select the drive. Clicked on Erase then chose MACOS Extended Journaled, renamed it then Erase.

Then I this pops up.

Volume Erase failed with the error:

The underlying task reported failure on exit.

Now it isn't showing on my desktop. When I go back into Utilities, it shows
931.5 Seagate Desktop
...then disk1s1 - that read 931.5 Seagate before I tried to format it.

Could someone please help me out?!

I was able to reformat back to MSDOS.
