I have the last ppc iMac and several external hard drives sitting on my desktop. Since back in the toaster style Mac days, I have always left my desktops on, using slideshows for screen savers. Back in the early days, power supplies left in the "on" position were less suceptable to failure, and I have never changed.

Recently, at least here in No.Va. the power company has become less reliable and the on/off jolt every time there is a rain storm, or high winds is defeating the "PowerOn" concept. So, I'm thinking a battery backup "No Break" system might be the answer. I would sure appreciate some recommendations as to the best one to seek out, alla Best Buy, or Micro Center, or some other outlet? I have a HUGE 12 volt Deep discharge Marine battery left over from the last boating season that could be utilized.

APC, in my opinion is the best UPS (uninterrupted power supply) vendor in the business.

I use one of these models with my NAS and it works great. I picked it up for about $70 at Costco. Well worth it, but you may need several of them.

I will have two printers, the iMac, and a couple external drives. The printers draw very little and one goes to sleep if not in use. The heavy draw witll be the iMac, and I cannot recall what it draws, but I'm sure the specs are out there.
