Hi. I got a Mac Pro 8-core around two months ago and for the first three weeks or so I only could know it was turned on by looking at the monitors. I even got on my knees to put my ears as cose as possible to the tower to see if I could in fact hear some noise. I couldn't even when running apps like Motion.

So about after a month of getting it and till today I'm listening to this very gental but coninuous "wwuuuuuu" sound; it sounds like a very slow fan. This sound is present all the time from star up to shut down even when no apps are launched. Is this a normal sound? I mean, if I had it from the begining I would not be worried as it is quite low and not annoying but since for the frist weeks the machine made absolutley no sound I wonder if I could have done something wrong.

I have installed three aditional hardrives on the empty bays but that was before the sound started to be noticed.

Any comments?
Thanks.

That is normal for Mac Pro and G5 Dual Core machines. They are whisper quiet, especially if you have selected to run processors at Automatic setting under Energy Saver > Options. Put your hand down in front of the front leg and you should fell the gentlest of a breeze at the air intake.

Since you installed 3 additional hard drives BEFORE the fan sound was noticed...the additional heat generated by the 3 hard drives is probably increasing the internal temp. of the computer...causing the fans to occasionally run at a higher speed.

Should be quiet enough to hear yourself think. If not, be sure you are doing mindless things.
