G5 Firewire Issues

My new G5 dual 2ghz has problems seeing my firewire devices when I connect them to several of the ports. So, for example, one in the back 400 port and one in the back 800 port makes it hard for the G5 so see both at the same time.
I really don't wanna send back the mac, 'cos it'll take so much time, but a machine I ended up paying about $3k for should not come with such hiccups.

Anybody experienced the same?
QUOTE Thanks
