Hi there,
I am new to the imac and to apple generally. Really enjoying the experience! Anyway, I would like to get USB2 performance if its possible, does anyone know whether its possible to upgrade the USB sockets on the G4 1Ghz model?
Thanks, John.

Nope, Sorry. It is not possible to upgrade the ports to USB 2.0. If you want USB 2.0 performance then you may be able to get better performance with a Firewire to U SB Converter. Not many of them around but that might help you out in what you want.

Thanks for the info. I will look out for a convertor so that I can plug my USB2 hub in, that should enable all the items attached to the hub to enjoy higher connection speed. Do you know if the convertor maintains the firewire speed of 400kbps?
Regards, John.

I have never seen such a converter, if you find one, please post a link.

I've seen a few of them. I'm not sure if they attain the Firewire specs though. When i get h ome from work i will look around and post a link to one of them.

My old iMac G4 was certainly USB1.0 (was an 800Mhz 15" FP)

I've never heard of such a device, but a friend of mine "claimed" to have hooked up his iPod to his PC using a USB 1.1 > USB 2.0 converter dongle. I'm extremely sceptical, but he claims to have done it. I haven't known him to lie about anything, and is certaintlly computer literate.
