I've come in from work today to find my iMac has a problem. When i've switched it on half the screen is jumping with lines running its entire height - can this just happen? And, (worst fears about to be confirmed i'm sure) does this mean a new LCD panel?

Probably not a new LCD... maybe a new GPU. Not sure if that's any better of a diagnosis. I say call up Apple/the apple store and bring it in/ship it. Especially if you have Apple Care.
