My moms imac has about 20 lines running up and down the screen and I was wondering if there was anything I can do to fix it or is it an internal problem with the computer itself? Any information would be helpful.

Most likely a graphics card issue. If you have access to a hardware test run that to see if it shows anything untoward.

This was mine when the video failed;

Click for full size

So even if it is out of 12 month warranty Apple may pick up the tab if it is a known fault.

In my case running the Hardware test and resetting the PRAM allowed me limited use until it locked up again. Did that 3 times and had it all up to date with backups before i sent it in. 18 months old and 6 months out of warranty and only paid shipping both ways to Apple repair agent. Good luck.
