When program cd's such as Turbotax and Roxio are inserted, they are ejected after about 10 seoconds. The same with music cd's. When I try to set the system preferences for cd's to open with itunes, it keeps putting in ignore. I have reinstalled itunes to no avail. I can watch dvd's.
Any suggestions?

Try doing a PRAM reset:

1) Turn off iMac

2) Hold down keys Command+Option+P+R

3) While keeping keys held down, turn on the machine

4) After you hear the startup bong the second time, release the keys

You could probably try to borrow an external dvd and try to insert the discs just to pinpoint the source of the problem.

Unibody - here they show your steps 2 & 3 reversed - Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM - in case it makes a difference.

Hi Unibody,
Resetting PRAM like you said did not help. CD's are still rejected. When I set preference for cd's to open itunes, it automatically puts in ignore.

Hmm, sounds like an odd issue.
Try taking it to an Apple Genius, a repair might be necessary.

My friends White MacBook does the same thing, it has a faulty superdrive.
