I'm going to buy a MacPro tomorrow or Friday. I have two choices on how to purchase: (1) Through the official Apple website on the internet, or
(2) Through a salesperson by telephone.
These are my only two choices. The salesperson says he can give me a 3% discount if I buy through him. My question: which do you think is the best way to go, i.e., is there any problem with buying through a salesperson as opposed to bying from the official Apple website? Thanks in advance.

Well the biggest concern for me is, Apples site is secure for credit card transactions, giving your card details to a sales person even in Apple, mmm... might not be a good idea. Not saying these people are underhanded. But if you give someone credit card details, you have no way of knowing if and who uses them for fraud. If purchased through a website, firstly the company is responsible for a secure site and your covered, also your credit card company gives you purchase protection so its a win win in my books.

Paranoid aren't we? To be fair to the sales rep, someone on the other end of the online store has to see your credit card number. Any purchase you make with a credit card is going to be seen by someone at some point as someone has to process it.

If I were in your situation, I would by it through the rep. If he really is going to give you a discount above what you might get online, why not? 3% is going to be a decent chunk of cash on a MP purchase. If you feel really uncomfortable giving out your credit card over the phone, you can do it online. In my opinion though, it would be safer over the phone (although I think online shopping is safe if you're smart).

Thanks for the info. When I talked to my credit card company (I'll be making a big purchase and want them to know) they told me that credit card fraud finds its greatest home among people purchasing a Mac. He related that they have to watch Mac purchases more than any other transaction in the industry. I'll consider both of your suggestions. (I didn't know that Mac was so popular).

That's not entirely true, there are many sites that have the whole process automated and the only human interaction is putting the boxes on the delivery trucks.

Also worth checking mate - do you work for anyone who has an EPP program with Apple? I work for UK gov and get about 8% off - i know lots of public sector and some commercial companies have EPP with Apple. Just worth a check
