OK, I'm running a 2007 Mac Pro. Over the past couple of weeks, these things have happened:

Blue screen only on startup;
Freezing after being set to sleep;
Scrambled "interference" across the screen on startup.

I have a distinct feeling that my HDD is about to die.

How do I find out what spec my replacement one should be? Also, what should I look for in terms of performance?

Sounds more like the symptoms of a video card failure than HDD.
Run a hardware test to see if it throws anything up.

Yup, Kevriano sounds right.
Run a hardware test, check for failures and disturbances, and consult Apple to replace your MacBook's bit and bobs.

Regards.

Hmm, OK, I hadn't thought of that. It has also flashed insanely on startup - like black/white on off on off about ten times a second. I just had to pull the plug out of the wall to stop it. So do you think this is a graphics card issue?
(thankfully I took out a 3 year warranty!)

Almost certainly. Run the hardware test, it will definitely highlight it if so.
I had a similar problem on an old iBook.
