Hi,

I have a MacPro 1,1 first generation and I want to know if it's possible to use the video card: ATI Radeon HD 4870 on it? Will it work? X1900 totally sucks in video editing. I have the last new Imac and it convert video files quicker LOLLL...

or what is the best video card I can get for my macpro to replace RadeonX1900 ?

Here is the specs of my macpro:

Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro1,1
Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
Number Of Processors: 2
Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
Memory: 12 GB
Type: DDR2 FB-DIMM
Speed: 667 MHz
Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz

Chipset Model: ATY,RadeonX1900
Type: Display
Bus: PCIe
Slot: Slot-1
PCIe Lane Width: x16
VRAM (Total): 512 MB

According to the Apple specs, you can indeed use the 4870 on the Mac Pro's from the early 2008 MacPro's and beyond:

ATI Radeon HD 4870 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro (Early 2009 or Early 2008) - Apple Store (U.S.)

Note, you cannot simply buy a 4870 and install it in the MacPro, you have to buy the card from Apple as it has firmware modifications specifically for the platform.

Thanks for the update. So can you verify for me your system specs?

Is it a first generation Mac Pro...quad core 2.66 processors?

Thanks,

- Nick

Hi,

Could I just verify that the 1,1 mac pros do work with this graphics card. Mine is the 2 x 3.0Ghz dual core processors model.

Thanks a lot

Has anyone experienced this checkered pattern after installing HD 4870????

This is the second card (Apple Store replaced the first one) I get and still presents this issue. Video Hardware test ran by Apple Store failed. I am waiting for a third card but I don't know if it is the card or the MotherBoard on my (1,1) Mac Pro (early 2008) 2.8 GHz. Any help, hints or advise, will be greatly appreciated. THis started happening after installing Snow Leopard.

QUOTE Thanks
