iMac - Problems after loading

I've had a problem develop over the last 48 hours.

Upon the system loading, i can move the cursor, the dock will open up at the bottom when scrolling over it, yet when i click to open anything, i get zero reaction.

I can't even shut the system down without pulling the plug...

I initially thought it may be a hardware problem with the mouse, but now I suspect something software related.

any clues? as it's rather worrying, my imac is only 4 months old.

Can you click other things? Have you tried another mouse? Can you right-click anything (perhaps the left mouse button is broken)?

can't click anything, right button doesn't work. Once doing a hard reboot it's all back up & running, like now.

Initially when I'm experiencing problems, it doesn't allow me to shut down via the keyboard either.
