iMac - Wont Detect CD Drive

I have a 700 mhz iMac G4 that wont detect the cd rom drive. Ive tried changing the jumpers around on both the drive and the hard drive, and ive tried putting a different drive in, but it still will not detect the cd rom drive.

You might have a damaged IDE cable, or just a bunch of bad CD drives.

There is no system but GNU and Linux is one of its kernels.

i dont think its the ide cable because the hard drive comes up just fine and they are on the same cable. any other ideas?

Swap the cable out with another, just in case. Sometimes one connector on the cable is OK while the other is not. Make sure the HDD is jumpered as Master, and CD drive as slave.
