We all know the iMacs are due soon. Most likely with a CPU, GPU, DDR3, LED boost; but not likely a design overhaul. My question is - what are your opinions about waiting as opposed to saving some $ and going with an Apple refurbished 24" 3.06 for $1899. That's an almost $170 savings over the EPP price. I use my machines at a consumer level (iphoto, itunes, web surfing) with a slight interest in doing some iMovie and iDVD work with a new consumer level HD camcorder. What do you guys think??

Yes, the iMacs are definitely due for an update, so waiting would be smart. A friend of mine once bought a 60 GB iPod Classic for $300, and then a few weeks later, Apple released an 80 GB model for $250.

There is no system but GNU and Linux is one of its kernels.

Well, it's not guaranteed that it will be soon. It could be May - could you wait that long?

If it does what you want it to do now then buy it. If you can wait then wait. Both sides of the argument.

I'm in Iraq until late April. If they're not out by the time I get home, I will be hot to buy something. I know my wife could use the upgrade at home since she's dealing with an old but trusty 12" powerbook (1.25G RAM, recently upgraded HD, 10.5) Would I hate myself if I bought too soon? IDK..

I am in the same boat, but this is the way I think of it, and it all depends on how long you can wait.

The refurbs are going to be there when the new iMacs come out, infact there will probably be a bunch right before and a little after they come out. So if you can wait you can hedge your bets and see what the new ones bring, if you dont think its worth it, pick up a refurb (which will probably have even a better discount once the new ones come out), if not you can buy the new one.

Something else to think about, for the price of a top of the line iMac right now the new ones will have the same specs in a cheaper version.

IE: the current iMac 24" 3.06 ghz starts at $2199, the 2.8ghz is $1799.
The next version comes out and the 3.06ghz moves into the $1799 slot (wont be that exact spec but with most likely quadcore it will have the performance of the top of the like 24" but a lower price).

So for the same $1800 you want to spend now on the refurb you will most likely be able to get something with the same specs if not better for $1800 in the new version.

I am waiting to see, I am hoping they are announced in March since thats my Bday, I cant see it any later then April though they need an update bad.

I am personally waiting a few weeks to see what happens. I would hate to buy a new iMac and then have it be old tech within a few weeks of buying it. Saying that, there might not be an upgrade for a few months.. but luckily i'm not in a hurry.... its quite a hard decision!

Macbook Pro 15" 2.2ghz, iPhone!

The current 24" iMac's are absolutely fantastic and extremely fast, kinda reminds me of my dad's old Delorean growing up in the 80's.As soon as the new iMac's come out you are going to see the same question in 6 months so do not hold your breath and just buy now.
