Command shift 4 gives you a curser to draw around any part of the screen and save the picture as png (Leopard) format on your screen.
To get a screen shot use Command shift 3. You also have Grab app in your Applications > Utilities folder if you want more options. You can open the screen shot in preview and resize, crop, save in another format etc. Easiest way to get the pic into Mail is to drag and drop the pic over the Mail Icon in the Dock. Check your settings under Mail > edit > always send windows friendly attachments is a sensible choice. You can set the picture size via the options on the bottom of the reply window Best. ~ 15" MacBook Pro. OSX 10.7 ~ 3G iPad 2 ~
