I am using an iMAC PPC G5 2GHz with 1.5 Ram - 233.64 GB capacity hd with 163 GB available.

My problem is that when I try to open or save files to the desktop the application takes a long time to respond and in most cases I will have to force quit. I have verified the disk through disk utility and it says everything is ok. I cleared a bunch of stuff from the hard drive, cleared caches etc. and nothing seems to help.

There are no funny noises or anything - worked perfectly fine the other day and yesterday it was just so slow that I can't do any work.

Is this a hardware problem or something else? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mail, Photoshop CS2, Illustrator CS3 mainly but also when I tried to open a html file for a website I'm building to have a look at in web browsers - Firefox and Safari they both hang up as well.

Run disk repair. Also, delete the cache files.

Am running OS X 10.4.11.

I tried the disk repair and said there was nothing to repair. Deleted the cache files as well yesterday.

Try and run the combo updater, that often cures odd problems

Apple - Downloads - Mac OS X Updates - Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo Update (PPC)

also repair the privalidges using disk utility,

I tried the upgrade with the combo and now the computer just sits on the gray screen with the Apple and spins. I am trying to boot using the disk - did the repair and said no repairs to be made. While I'm waiting to see if this works, how do I reset the PRAM?

I think it's the 1.5 RAM that is your problem. CS3 needs a lot of ram to work smoothly.

Just to let you know what's happening with my computer.
I turned the computer on this morning after leaving it off all night and it booted up no problem.

I did a disk repair this morning as now the Volume bitmap needed minor repair.

I installed more ram and now have the 2GB allowed for my machine.

I went into the mail application and wanted to add an attachment. The machine slowed again and eventually I had to do a force quit as Mail was no longer responding. This force quit action also took a long time to work.

I will keep searching for a reason for this when it was perfectly fine last Saturday and then Monday all these problems started happening.

If anyone else has any ideas that I can try please let me know?

Thanks

Well, I still have problems even though I have done the hardware test - everything passed, done the disk repair - doesn't need to be repaired. Cleaned off the computer and only have 22gb on the hard drive - nothing left on the desk top yet when I try to open applications from the dock as well as the Hard Drive icon on the desk top the computer's wheel just spins but usually will load eventually.

Should I try to reinstall the OS X software first or replace the drive? Any ideas?

Thanks,
