Hey there fellas,

This morning my iMac G5 ( intel - core2duo ) died on me after 2 years of purchase. I wasnt even working on it but noticed it "sighed" and the next thing i noticed was a small choof of fumes going up.. it hasnt been powered up since.

I had other gadgets runnin of the same board, all well n fine.. no burn marks on the socket or power cable either.. Mac Support in AU wants a 100 bucks to just have a look at it.. just wondering if it would be worth to fix me mac or should i just let it " R I P " ..

Any thoughts would be highly appreciated thanks..

Cheers, evoguy6.

If it is the Intel Core Duo and not a G5, then by all means spend the $100.00. A new power supply, if that is what it is, would make the Intel machine still a goer with Snow Leopard coming. For exaqmple US dealers such as powermacs advertise from about US$150 for the part only.

G5 refers to a PowerPC processor which was in Macs before they went to Intel. If you have an Intel processor, then it is not a G5.

100 bucks seems like a lot just to get it looked at. If I were you I would try a different store.

Agree about the $100. Part of the high price (and it's like that in this country too) is because the Macs are difficult to open up safely and securely, and the Mac stores play on that.

Take a look at YouTube for a How To or Disassemble or Take Apart video and you'll see how to get at your power supply unit.

Have a good sniff - seriously - where the power cable plugs into your iMac. If you can smell 'cooked', then it's 90% certain it's the psu.
