I have a 20" imac 2.1ghz iSight model. It was acquired from my brothers place of work as the company were about to dispose of it. Apparently there was a power surge that took out the Imac and 2 external HD's

The symptoms are; Pressing the power button turns on the power light on the but there is no chime and the display does not come on. After 30 seconds the fan begins to make a louder noise. The Mighty Mouse has power going into it although the keyboard has not power going in.

I did open it up to see if the hard drive was still in place and it is. I couldn't do the LED diagnostic as this is later model and opens up in a completely different way. I tried putting in a system disk but the superdrive didn't respond.

Is the logic board fried, can the PSU be replaced or is it best to just throw in the towel?

I would say that testing both the logic board and the PSU is a job for a qualified technician. From what you post, the PSU appears to be working, so that suggests the next stage in the circuit, which may be the logic board. Tracing the circuitry thereon is for an expert.

Is it worth fixing? Can't say definitively, but if the repair price is within 2/3 of the cost of a refurbished one, or 50% of a new one, sell/strip it for parts.

Thanks for responding, replacing the logic board is way too expensive, i've seen prices like £455. I thinks its best if I sell it for scrap.

I think you're probably making the right/wise decision. After all, it the company that disposed of it didn't think it worth fixing, that's a likely economic reality.
