Hello all.

I have an issue with 2 macs at the moment. My Interl iMac at home, and an eMac G4 at work. They are both running OSX 10.4.11.

Basically, in network status on the iMac I only have the airport showing. However, in the drop down lists it does still show the built in ethernet, but when a cable is plugged in it does not obtain an ip address, and does not work with manually input details either. Essentially it appears to not detect a cable plugged in. The same is happening on the emac also. The airport works fine on the iMac.

The ethernet card shows correctly in system profiler and everywhere else. With them both been on 10.4.11 I thought it may be related to an update, but last night I fully wiped the iMac and reinstalled OSX. It still had the problem before I reapplied the updates so that rules out an apple update issue. As far as im aware the iMacs firmware is also up to date.

I have tried clearing the pram on both machines (the apple-option-p-r thing) and this also made no difference.

Normally id be inclined to believe its a hardware issue, but with it happening to both machines a few days apart I find it hard to believe thats the case.

Any further ideas, im desperate for help at this point.

Thanks in advance.

I seem to remember that you need to reorder the connection options in the Network tab (I am on Leopard so this is from memory) so that the Ethernet is first if you wish to connect by wire first (rather than by air). How about is the box checked to enable the Ethernet?

The boxes are checked yeah. Its all appearing ok apart from not showing up in the network status window. I cant re-order them as the issue is the ethernet not even showing.

Thanks for the help though

Can you hard wire to the router and ping it? Most routers out of the box are 192.168.1.1 from the browser window. How about a hard reset on the router? How about skipping the router and hard plugging into the modem?
