Looking at maybe buying a Power Mac G5. It sounds like a good deal to me but I thought I'd get a few other opinions.

The machine in question is a single processor 1.6 GHz G5 w/ 1 GB of RAM. It has a 80 GB HD and a 160 GB HD. It comes with a 20" Apple Cinema Display, Apple Pro Speakers, and the mouse and keyboard. It also comes with a copy of Microsoft Office 2004. The price is $480. I thought w/ the monitor that it was a good price but what do you guys think?

THe G5 is still a very good machine, with that monitor included it looks like a good deal

Thanks for the input guys, I thought it sounds like a good deal. I think I may end up buying it. Although I worry about how long software will be made for the PPC architecture. Did the single 1.6 GHz models have the overheat issues?

Not long mate. I have a dual 2.7GHz G5 and I'm seriously thinking about moving to a 24" 3.06GHz iMac.

These macs are dead and have been for awhile now. Still see guys using G3 and G4 systems on here though. Next OS X is Intel-only so I would assume most software will follow suit or PPC versions won't have the same level of optimizations.

It is a good price including the monitor tho - but do you need one? If not you'd be better buying a faster one.

I would not worry too much at this stage as many, many users are still enjoying Classic on their Macs and there will always be ways of working around most problems.

Remember when Leopard came out 12 months ago - would not install on anything under 867MHz G4 processor now guys are running it on G3's etc. Even heard of one instances of running Leopard on beige box G3!
