Hi,

I recently upgraded from 2G of ram to 4G as my Imac was feeling sluggish.

this helped but I think there is something slowing things down a bit.

What is the best way to increase performance other than increasing the ram?

Dave

What are the specs of your iMac? Which generation is it? I got a new iMac in august and only had 2gb of ram and found it sluggish, I did a reinstall of my osx and the difference was night and day. Sometimes backing up and then reinstalling really speeds up your system because it refreshes system files that could have been altered during the course of multiple installations of apps/services. Also, being a new convert not sure if this applies to macs but on a windows harddive the fuller it got the slower the system performance. Just my .02 cheers

My iMac was bought new in September last year,

24inch, 2.4GHz, 256MB ATI Radeon HD2600XT

I think that sounds like a good idea to reinstall

Never let your HD get down to less than 10 GB or so,...if you can help it!

funny you should say that,

I recently purchased an Elgato eyetv usb stick and my HD got down to 256MB!!!! not GB!! on a 500GB HD due to the size of the recordings

I bought a 750GB external Western Digital MyBook and now have about 250GB free on my iMac but things did seem to slow after that.

I might have to back up and reinstall.

With apps I have purchased online and dont have any physical media, how do you back them up if you want to start fresh. Can they be copied to a DVD?

Dave

Do a disk repair. Even minor disk problems can slow down OS X.

Put in your OS X CD, hold down C and reboot and choose Disk Utility from the drop down menu.
