Intel processor upgrade for Powermac G4
Hi. I have a 1ghz powermac g4 (fw 800), or maybe 1.25 ghz dual. But I want to know if I can get a 2.0 ghz dual core processor upgrade (that will work with xp and leopard). I want to upgrade the processor o a least 2 ghz and preferably intel. Where can I get upgrades like these? Also, does dual-core-ness matter much and would an upgrade be worth it?
    -thx

You can not use an Intel CPU on any Power PC Mac/Motherboard. Totally different design, even if it were an older Intel CPU.

Try OWC at www.macsales.com. Can recommend their after sales service as first class and the sell all leading brands of CPU Upgrades, although think at this stage only Sonnet make a 1.8 upgrade for a FW800.

Hey you said you have a FW800 model which is MDD and the upgrade shown is for Quicksilver and older models. No to use XP with those programs requires an Intel machine.

Oh , but how does it work with leopard. I thought leopard needed intel, or is it just that bootcampl needs intel?

so can you show me any other upgrades for fw800? I can't find any other than the sonnet.

Al iMac 20" 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
Your current machine will work with Leopard.

It's just Windows that requires an Intel, and the only way to get one is to buy a new machines.

Why not sell your current G4 and put the money towards a 1.6Ghz Core Duo Mac Mini or something?

I don't know about the G4, but I would definitely sell the software necessary. The only time that actually adds to the value of the machine is when someone is shopping for a machine and has a specific need for that software (unlikely) - meaning, you would need to find just the right buyer. Pack the software up separately and sell it by itself. Sell the G4 with just the items that came with it and a clean install of OS X.
Liquid and computers don't mix. It might seem simple, but we see an incredible amount of people post here about spills. Keep drinks and other liquids away from your expensive electronics!

FW800 bare without software maybe $250.00, a little less if it is only a single processor, about $20 each for the CRT displays, keyboard and mouse should go with the computer and whatever you can for the software as suggested advertised separately.

Nope. They're proprietary motherboards, not only would it be cost-prohibitive (you'd have to get a Mac Pro motherboard), but it would require extensive modification and fabrication.
