I was wondering if it's possible to hookup another monitor to an imac so one can have a dual monitor setup. If this is possible what else is needed to make things work?

Yes, it's possible. You can elect to use an external monitor in extended mode or mirror mode. Settings are made from System Preferences -> Displays.

Regards.
