Thread: Upgrading Issues
06-22-2008, 06:57 AM #1Upgrading Issues
I currently own a dual 500MHz Powermac with around 640MB ram and 20GB HDD. Recently purchased it from a small secondhand dealer. It was in a corner, covered with dust.
Anyways, I have already installed 10.3 Panther on it and recently I purchased a copy of 10.5 Leopard. I understand that I would need a processor upgrade.
At one point I wanted to scrap the idea and buy myself an iMac G4 and upgrade that. (Always loved the imac for its all in one looks)
Which would you guys say is better in the long run i.e, more worth while upgrading.

I'm guessing that with the upgrades, I think the powermac should be more better in the sense that it can run at the same level as the new imacs....

It will not run the same as a new iMac which has a much, much faster system bus speed and processor. An upgrade such as a Mercury Extreme with 2MB L3 cache will sure improve your G4 out of site. Used a 1.3GHz and was happy with it. You may like something like a 1.8 DP.
Upgrade the memory to 2GB and install a faster graphics card, such as a good second hand ATI Radeon 9000 Mac Pro with 128MB RAM and yoju will be happy with it. But it won't be the same as a new iM ac as it will still have a 100MHz system bus speed.
