eMac - sleep issue

Hi , i am very new to the mac world & so far i'm loving it ...i just got a emac 1.25 version i'm running tiger .. now , i don't like shutting down my computer every night so its easier for me just to put it to sleep, but when i do that it wakes back up right away whether i put it to sleep with the power button or through the apple ..
if anyone can help with this problem i would really appreciate it ..
