So I came across a G3 with os 9 and started playing around with it. It has airport software on it, but no airport card. I have been looking into wireless adapters but cannot find any thing that would work. Could anybody help me out here, all I want is just to play around with this thing.

As long as it's a slot loading imac....Here's an original Airport card which means it will work with OS 9. Due to your macs age it will be difficult to find an OEM and almost impossible to find one that's third party OS 9 compatible.

The only problem with the old Airport card, is that it only runs at 11Mbps. And it will slow down the entire network to that speed.
For an alternative, go to Afterthemac.com
I use one myself and it works flawless.

EDIT: hmmm...not sure about OS9.... Could find an old OS X (Jaguar or Panther) on Ebay.

When all else fails, try everything!

Not to bad. You just have to ask yourself if it's worth it.

Panther (10.3.9) would be the max OS. If you do decide to upgrade, don't forget to update the firmware before you try.
If you are running Mac OS 9.1 or later, iMac Firmware Update 4.1.9 should be installed. If you are using Mac OS X, you must boot from a Mac OS 9.1-9.2.2 writeable partition (not a CD or network disk) prior to updating. You cannot update to OS X 10.3 or later unless you first install Firmware Update 4.1.9.

For more information on firmware updates, see iMac: When to Install Available Updaters.
