eric06 has a spectacular aura about
I am still having problems. I added the opendns IP's all working good for about 5 minutes and now I am back to limited sites working. I have bresnan high speed with a belkin wireless router. Right now I am on a ethernet cable since wireless works as well as the ethernet cable is right now. Internet seems ok until I did the 10.5.3 update.

Any suggestions?

tcpdump

Eric,

Start a tcpdump session by opening a Terminal window and enter the following (if you're using wireless):
sudo tcpdump -i en1 -s 192 port 53

If you're using ethernet, change "en1" to "en0".

After that, open up a web browser and go to any site you would normally. After that, copy and paste here what you see in the Terminal window.

I tired the sudo command and tried to go to ebay and after about 3-5 minutes the site semi loaded.

tcpdump: verbose output suppressed, use -v or -vv for full protocol decode

Ok, your DNS queries are being answered OK here. They're coming back with proper replies and in a reasonable amount of time.

When you say "limited sites working", can you go into more detail of what that means?

What would be helpful is to keep the tcpdump running in a Terminal window at all times. When you encounter a site that is not working properly, look at the tcpdump window and find entries that are like the one for ebay.com you posted:

12:54:15.297537 IP 192.168.5.4.49447 > resolver1.opendns.com.domain: 10636+ A? www.ebay.com. (30)
12:54:15.376802 IP resolver1.opendns.com.domain > 192.168.5.4.49447: 10636 3/0/0 CNAME hp-core.ebay.com., A hp-core.ebay.com, A hp-core.ebay.com (84)

You see that A? www.ebay.com

That is your computer asking OpenDNS for the IP address of "www.ebay.com". You get results in the next line, where 3 A records (3/0/0) were returned.

If the time between when you asked (line with A?) and when the response was received (3/0/0 CNAME) is short, less than a second, DNS is not the problem. Note that there can be a variable number in that 3/0/0 line. If you get 0/0/0, that means you got no records back. If you got a NXDOMAIN, that means the DNS server doesn't recognize that domain as being registered.

You can skip/ignore the the lines that are like this:
PRT? b._dns-sd._udp.0.242.168.192.in-addr.arpa.

as that is just the Bonjour multicast dns service looking for other computers, printers, cameras, etc. on your network, for sharing purposes. It's normal and not needed for debugging purposes.

Let me know what you see after you run into sites that "aren't working".

I try to go to ebay and safari doesn't load anything for over 3 minutes. Then maybe the site will load or I get server timed out. If I get to the ebay and I go to sign in it's a 50/50 if I can get any further. May be this is an ebay problem and not my mac. If I go to google it will take over 3 minutes before I see google. I also noticed this on apples home page.

May be it's a Bresnan problem but I called them and told me it was my wireless router. I am running on ethernet cable right now.

I hooked my MBP directly into the bresnan modem and internet is amazingly fast now. Something is screwed up when it hits the router them the modem or the other way around. I have the router set up to be Dynamic. Do I need to use static? I am using a belkin G wireless router.

Would it help to get an Apple Air Port base station?

more strange dns issues

I have similar but not identical issues to other posters. My Imac connected both via ethernet and wifi has no issues. My powerbook connected only via wifi cannot connect to selected sites; note it's not all sites, but just a random selection of sites that won't be found or loaded. Both use the airport/time capsule.

If I add an alternative dns to the settings for my powerbook using opendns I get the error:
You tried to visit revolutionhealth.com, which is not loading.
but I know this site is working fine as I can access it both from my Iphone and from my Imac. I'm convinced this is some sort of dns issue but don't know how to debug it.

Thoughts welcome.

Why Businesses Fail

There are many different reasons business fail and much of it is debatable but there are some common mistakes that are detrimental in business failure.

Some of the reason many business fail are due to the following reasons: Overexpansion. Many companies over expand too soon. They look at the books and see 3 months of good sales and profit and think right let's get more staff. Then another 6 months down the line the profits have not followed suit which leaves you in a difficult situation. You need to stick with realistic goals and allow yourself to grow as needs dictate. And old saying 'don't not run before you can walk' is relevant. You need to look at the statistics and watch for trends. If sales and profits looks good now it's doesn't necessarily mean it will look good tomorrow. Overspending and lack of reserve funds. Overspending can have detrimental affects. You should only spend on what is necessary. Be realistic, just because you have good cash flow at the minute doesn't mean you will have in the future. Ask yourself is purchasing this item really necessary, will it make a real difference or not. Look at all the costs of the business and if some are not necessary then drop them. Having money in the bank is important to carry you through market downtrends and seasonal slowness. You should always be prepared for fluctuations in business. You should always put money away in boom times to prepare for the slow times. Poor management Poor management is one of the main reasons business fail. Like removal companys . If you haven't got happy customers and happy stuff your business is almost curtain to fail. Poor customer service, poor accounting and overall employee incompetence can all combine to collapse a business. business government . You need to ensure your employees realise the importance of good customer service. Establish protocols for how tasks should be accomplished and ensure they are carried out. Many companies these days have a relaxed attitude and don't place to much importance on carrying out basic good management practice. Having meetings regularly with all staff will help your business run smoothly, ready made company . If no meetings take place then resentment can set in. Everyone needs to air their opinions and explain how their job could be done more efficiently. Poorly treated Staff Labour is the biggest expense for most small business so it makes sense to ensure your company employs the right amount of people and treat them correctly. Companies that invest highly in their staff by offering training and advancement will find it easier to keep their staff. Ensure you pay your staff every month on time as not to do so would be breaching your contract with them. Invest in your staff; they are your biggest asset.cash management account . If they feel they cannot advance in your business they will not stay long. Listening to your staff is important. If employees are leaving you need to be asking why. Treat your staff how you would expect to be treated and you will gain respect from them and get the best of out them. Poor or no business plan Having a good business plan is your key to success. A well-thought-out business plan forces you to think about the future and the challenges you'll face. As long as your forecasts are realistic and you have done plenty of market research you should be ok. Ensure your plan has a budget and stick to it.braided rug company Dishonesty and Greed Being dishonest will catch up with you eventually. Remember your ethics, try to treat your customers and staff as you would be expected to be treated. Don't charge the earth for customers just because they look like they can afford it, this is exploitation and will come back and bite you on the bum. Greed is another aspect that kills businesses. You feel like you're on a roll and feel invincible so you over charge people and promise them the earth. When you can't deliver you will lose customers and eventually your reputation. Always be honest and ethical and you will reap the rewards. There are other reasons business fail and I have only touched base on some. As long as you work hard, do plenty of research, treat staff and customers with respect, keep a tight control over your accounts and leave your ego at home you should be alright. Oh and most importantly use common sense or small business edition office . You would be surprised at how many business owners are egotistic, arrogant with no personnel skills and very little common sense, these business are bound to fail eventually.

Debbie.
