Both the printers are listed in the Gutenprint drop-down, and although I downloaded separate drivers to my download file, unlike a PC I am not asked to browse for a driver. I think the missing link at this point is getting to queue as you noted. Can you go in and edit the printer preferences to try to figure this out? Every time I try this it sounds like its going to print only to be told that the printer is busy or unavailable.
Sounds like the multiple queues on that print server are the problem. You should be able to connect to the print server's web interface to see which queue corresponds to which printer. Then, when you add the printer using LPD, you just specify the corresponding queue.

Also, when I try to "open" the other recommended driver (i.e. HP-DeskJet_1220C-hpijs.ppd) I'm told that there is no application available to open this file. How does one get the driver to the printer preferences?
If the driver is already in your list, you shouldn't need to specify a particular file. If not, in the "Print Using" field, go to Other and then specify the PPD file. If it doesn't work, that means that particular driver is not "network aware".

Just as an afterthought... if I connect the 1220c directly to a USB connection, should it automatically detect and install or do I have to do something else?
When I get home from work tonight, I will delete all printers and try to do it from scratch again. HP confirms that Leopard has the latest and greatest drivers built in. It'd be fun to see a printer work at this point .
Gawd, it would be so cool to have a bluetooth printer.
Well... I just printed out an email on the HP1220c via USB but the quality is marginal considering this printer. I think its using the gutenprint driver as opposed to the HP driver but I don't know how to check that. In windows, the driver is fairly sophisticated with loads of options including crop marks, resolution, paper quality, print quality, and much much more. Got to figure that out because I should be getting a four-tab popup window.

It's a month later, but I was just curious if this all worked out. I have an HP 1220c as well. I have it working well wirelessly via a Time Capsule, but in the past, I fought with it on a D-Link print server using the Gutenprint driver.
Hello everyone. I'm new with Macs and Im trying to set up my printer. You can find more about my problem here
Im not trying to connect to a print server, Im just trying to connect to a windows based computer to be able to use the printer that is connected to that PC. Can I still use Guten Print? After I installed it I went to try again and add the printer in the Windows tab but my printer is still not showing in the drop down list, is there any other list I should know about? Where can I find the drivers that Guten added?

Thanks for your help.
Let's pick this up back in your thread as I'd rather keep this thread just a FAQ.
Hi, I just recently bought a airport extreme and have an emac, imac, mbp, and two mb running off the network as well as a Cannon iP3000 printer (plugged into the airport USB port). Printing has worked fine, but I need to access the maintenance for my printer and am unable to. I have installed all drivers (compatible with 10.4) but cant seem to access the maintenance options in printer utility.
I have three Windows/XP machines in my home LAN, all connected to a LinkSys Wireless-G router/hub. I have a HP printer connected to the main machine, and via the LAN can print from all three so long as the main machine and the router/hub is powered up.
Now I have a Mac running OS-X 10.4, and the opportunity to purchase a HP JetDirect 500X print server. It would connect to the router/hub via Ethernet, and the printer would connect to the print serve via parallel port.
The printer is on the list of those supported by Gutenprint.
So, will this mash-up work? Any cautions, cares, or concerns?
It should be fine. You'll need to configure the JetDirect with an IP address and then add it as an LPD printer on the Mac. On the Windows machines, it will be even simpler. You can take the existing printer as it is mapped right now, go into the properties and into the Ports tab. Then, simply add a new port, specify the IP address of the print server and go.
That's the beauty of Windows port handling. It doesn't care how the printer is configured physically, you just point it to a port and you're good to go. I wish I could say the same of OS X, but Apple has yet to address this issue. I was hoping they would with Leopard, and I continue to hope they will with Snow Leopard - particularly if they intend to compete in the enterprise. With new dumbed-down printers become more and more popular, it's going to be even more critical that they get a better system in the future.
