network rendering problem

Hi all!

I hope someone can help with this. I have a G5 connected to a G4 via a Netgear DG834 4-port router. Ordinary machine linking works fine.

I have a 3d app called Carrara which should be able to use the G4 as a render node, but I cannot work out how to configure the macs and the router to make it happen.

G5 = 192.168.0.2
G4 = 192.168.0.3

both have the same subnet mask and both have firewall turned off.

Carrara uses ports 5020/5040/5060 by default, although I can specify different ports. According to the log, it is broadcasting from the G5 on 192.168.0.255. The address range allowed by the router goes from 0.1 (the router) to 0.254. The tech support at Netgear says I have to do the set up at the mac end of things rather than through the router.

Any ideas on how I should set up the router and the macs? It should be straightforward, I guess, but I know virtually nothing about routers, firewalls and connecting apps...
