Hi there,
Just to add this command works in 10.4.11 as well - I've just done a quick test by creating 30 empty folders on the desktop and used "Select all (apple+a)" to select them, then "open (apple+o)".
To close them all at once, instead of clicking "option+close", as you state, I used the keyboard shortcut "apple+option+w" which does exactly the same thing.
