It may need to be disassembled and completely cleaned - not just the scroll wheel. You Tube has several good tutorials on how to take it apart and clean it thoroughly.

I've retired my MM and since purchased an inexpensive Logitech optical mouse at Wal-Mart which works just as well - and, it stays clean.
