Open airport utility on either of your Macs.
Click Manual Setup - Wireless 'tab'
I'd suggest using WPA2 Personal security and 802.11n 5Ghz if it's just your two Macs on the network.
External hard disk acquisition addict - but admitting the problem is the first step to a robust backup
