Hard to say. Could be due to differences in what Disk Utility and the app you used in Ubuntu work, or what file systems they recognize. You may be best off trying a 3rd party utility like iPartition that supports pretty much any file system and can resize nondestructively.
Please verify and include the exact model/year of your Mac and OS X version number (available from "About This Mac", then "More Info" on the Apple menu). Also advise us if you have any antivirus or "cleaning" software installed on your Mac. If you are using MacKeeper,
you are hereby advised to uninstall it
