The important thing to think about when you're starting out with a DSLR is if you expect to expand your lens collection over time. The two majors are Nikon and Canon. I recommend that you look into the lens selections to see if long term they will meet your needs. Once you start buying accessories (mainly lenses) for your camera you will likely stay with that particular product.
I'm personally a big Canon fan and the Digital Rebel series has some great starter kits you can look at as well. The Nikon is also a safe bet - you really can't go wrong with either.
