I don't really think it helps reduce the heat. Just keeps the heat away from your body. Now if you're use to sitting your Mac on carpet or on the bed, then it probably does help reduce the heat since it will keep the vent clear of obstructions.
I'll try takin a couple of pictures of mine and post back in a couple.
