If I recall correctly, the 3 GB limitation comes as a limit with the Intel chipset used in the MBP. I know that the 64 bit C2D chip can address a total of 16 GB of RAM, but something about the FSB and everything else in between the CPU and the RAM slots on the MBP motherboard place this limitation.
