OK, this sounds bad, really bad. If it won't boot at all, there are two possibilities: (1) corrupted OS, and (2) hardware issue.

I would tend to omit (1) since you have repeatedly reloaded. (2) seems the more likely option. I know that there are a number of good hardware diagnostic programs out there, but I am not sure if any of them come on a "rescue disk" type CD which you can boot from separately.

M-F readers: who knows of a good emergency CD for Macs, that can be booted from and contains all the right hardware diagnostics (or at least supports copying data off the main drive ... if it still working)?

My Macs: iMac 27" 3.4 GHz, Mac Pro 3.2 GHz, PowerMac G5 Quad 2.5 GHz, G4 Cube with 1.2 GHz Upgrade
My iStuff: 64GB iPhone 5, 64GB iPad4, 30GB iPod Video, 16GB iPod Touch
My OS': Mac OS X Lion, Mac OS X Snow Leopard, Mac OS X Tiger, Mac OS 9.2.2, openSUSE 10.3
