What does it say in the Memory section of the Hardware info (i.e after you click More Info ...?

If it reports 1 bank of 512Mb, power down, take out the battery and take off the little panel inside and see how many sticks are in it. One of them could be unseated or broken or plain missing. If the latter moan at Apple.
