Your most likely running into virtual memory issues and not hard drive issues. You need plenty of RAM to work with large files and when that fills up your system then will use hard drive space. If you have a second harddrive in your system that you can partition part off and then assign it in photoshop to be your scratch disk that is the best case scenario.

First thing to do is look at your scratch disk settings within photoshop to ensure you have enough to deal with photos of the size your using.
