30 to 50 case temp still seems pretty hot! So is it normal for the macbook not to be able to be used on your lap because of the heat?!

It sounds like it'll fix your heat problem - it sounds like it was extremely hot! You'll get 'normal' macbook temperatures - normal core temp approx. 60C, case temp between 30 and 50 depending on load and, more importantly, ventilation.
