Mac Specs: B&W G3, 400 MHz, 10.3; 2 GHz Gateway with WinXP and Debian Linux dual-boot

I am attempting to put either Linux PPC or OSX, both of which I have on install CDs, on this B&W G3, but when I restart to boot from CD, the screen stays black indefinitely and the G3 does nothing.
I can view the files on the CDs fine from OS 9.2.2, but it will not boot from the CD. What can I try?
