The military has long been using accelerometers in tactical jets and other aircraft for navigation, and accelerometers can be found closer to home in things like airbag sensors. It is only a matter of time before they find their way into personal computers and their peripherals. I think something like this could be marketed relatively soon, provided somebody figures out how to make it catchy and/or useful.
