Mac Specs: iMac i5 2.7GHz, 16GB memory, OS 10.10.1

Your Mini can handle 8GB of memory and suggest increasing before even trying to install Mavericks. Whilst the specs do say minimum of 2GB you may well be disappoitted with the performance. Recommended memory here is generally OWC or Crucial. If you have an external drive and Snow Leopard backed up, I would do a clean install rather than an update. As an after thought, Mavericks OS X.9.3 running some photos in iPhoto, Office and normal software, no iTunes at all, uses up 47GB of hard drive space.

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!
