Hard to say as you have not provided enough details. Apple made 24" iMacs way back to the G5 model released in 2005 which will only run up to Leopard OS X.5, through to a 2009 model which will run Mavericks. Whichever model you do have I am surprised the poor thing does anything with only 13GB free hard drive space. The rule of thumb is a minimum of 15-20% of the drive's capacity free space.

Even if the drive is 100GB it is too full, and much too full the higher the capacity.

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!
