If you feel you will need something portable, then your choice is easy: A new MacBook Pro Retina 15" or even a Retina 13" should be good for design work and study. As far as buying a Thunderbolt display, that would be ideal, however, there are other large displays you can buy and keep at home for use. Shop around and compare specs and prices.

Take a look at the Dell and BenQ line of large ISP displays and compare.
