The only difference between the two is specifications and compatibility. The media war is becoming somewhat more discernable in recent weeks, with HD-DVD and Blu-Ray squabbling over the HD movement. You can consider DVD-R and DVD+R to be the same thing. From what I have seen, DVD-R has the widest compatibility with settop players, but as sursuciofla pointed out, DVD+R is gaining more popularity.
