I'm looking at the new 13", 1.7 GHz, 8GB RAM, 500GB SSD Macbook Air. It's shiny.

But I'm wondering if this will support my needs. Will it be good enough? Should I wait for the new MBP? Should I just go with the current model of MBP?
The new MBA that you mentioned above will more than support your needs. You could also wait to see what the new MacBook Pro machines will have, however, it's certain that Apple will equip them with the new Haswell chipset and the Intel HD 5000 GPU. The choice is yours. But keep in mind that we don't know when Apple will announce the new MacBook Pros.
