How frequently was the crash occurring? Hopefully you'll know sooner rather than later if the NVRAM reset did the trick.
As far as anti-virus goes, my stance is that you don't need one. I haven't run anything on my iMac since I bought it in 2009 and it's been completely fine. You just have to be careful about where you visit and what you download and always be wary of entering your admin password when requested..
If you do want a level of comfort with the files you've downloaded, I recommend ClamXav
which is a free anti-virus software that doesn't run all the time but rather can be run on files to ensure they are safe.
