But what's BRILLIANT about the iMac (I'm referring to the recent "thin" ones from 2008-onwards) -- is that they use convection cooling (aka, "heat rises") to let nature cool the machine as much as possible, meaning that most of the time the fans don't have to run fast enough to be at all noticeable. It's EXACTLY that kind of thoughtful engineering and attention to detail that makes me think so highly of Apple.

Regarding the fan(s)....
I literally have the side of my head pressed on the top edge of the Imac and I dont hear any fans.... The machine has been powered on for weeks so I have to assume it is up to temp....
You do get what I meant. The silicon may be off the shelf but I dare say the attention to detail from pcb lay-out to parts specs is beyond what any other vendor does....
Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile.....
